Elizabeth Catlett “Elizabeth Speaks” Documentary Fundraiser

Created in honor of Elizabeth Catlett, this print embodies the spirit that Catlett etched into every carved line: dignity, resilience, and the unshakable beauty of Black life. Catlett taught us that printmaking can function as a monument, that ink on paper can hold history, activism, tenderness, and truth. In that lineage, this child of the Songkeepers becomes both witness and continuation. She represents the future shaped by women who refused to be erased. She stands in the quiet strength that Catlett so powerfully rendered in her own figures—grounded in community, guided by ancestry, and illuminated by purpose.

This 18 x 24 inch colored mixed-process print features one of the Songkeeper’s children, from my most recent body of work, a young guardian of memory, standing at the threshold between inheritance and becoming. Layered through relief, hand-worked surface, and richly saturated color, the work carries both monumentality and intimacy. She stands small in years, yet her presence stands rooted, Sovereign and unafraid.

This edition is offered at $2,000, and 100% of the proceeds will go directly toward the production of the feature-length documentary Elizabeth Speaks. Your purchase not only supports the creation of a work pulled in reverence of Catlett’s legacy. A legacy that directly fuels the telling of her story for future generations.

This is more than a print…
It is an offering.
A continuation.
A call answered.

Title of work:

La Zarzamora de Ebon: Monumento a la Niña Soberana

(The Blackberry of Ebon: Monument to the Sovereign Girl)

I chose this title because it carries the weight of stone and the softness of fruit. It can stand in Cuernavaca—where carved forms speak of dignity and resistance, and it can live in Ebon, where children are crowned by the land itself. Zarzamora anchors her to Mexico, to lineage, to the wild sweetness that survives. Monumento honors the Catlett tradition, where even a young girl stands as history embodied. And Niña Soberana declares what her gaze already knows: she is not becoming powerful. She already is.

The opportunity to purchase this print will close on March 7, 2026.
